Discover the clean, intensely fresh character of pure Wintergreen Essential Oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Gaultheria Procumbens sourced from China. Sharp, sweet and powerfully distinctive — with a clean, minty freshness, a warm, slightly sweet medicinal clarity and a cool, penetrating depth — Wintergreen is one of the most immediately recognisable, characterful and aromatically potent essential oils in aromatherapy and natural formulation.
Gaultheria Procumbens — the Eastern Teaberry or Checkerberry — is a small, creeping evergreen shrub native to the forests of eastern North America, where it has been used by Indigenous peoples for centuries as a traditional aromatic and botanical ingredient. Its small, waxy leaves yield an essential oil of extraordinary potency — composed almost entirely (up to 99%) of methyl salicylate, the naturally occurring compound responsible for the characteristic clean, sweet and intensely fresh aroma that is instantly familiar from sports liniments, dental products and confectionery the world over.
The name Wintergreen reflects the plant’s remarkable ability to retain its vivid green leaves throughout the winter months — a striking and endearing characteristic of this small but extraordinarily aromatic plant. Indigenous peoples of eastern North America, including the Algonquin and Iroquois nations, used the leaves of Gaultheria Procumbens in traditional practice for centuries — chewing them for their fresh, aromatic character and brewing them into a fragrant tea. Early European settlers adopted these practices, and Wintergreen became one of the most widely used aromatic botanicals in North American folk tradition.
Wintergreen Essential Oil is one of the most potent essential oils available — its extraordinarily high methyl salicylate content making it a powerful and distinctive ingredient that must always be used with great care and in very well-diluted formulations. It is a popular and valued ingredient in natural sports and massage formulations, dental care products and home fragrance compositions, where its clean, intensely fresh and warming aromatic character is immediately impactful and widely recognised. This 50ml size is ideal for professional formulators and those who incorporate Wintergreen regularly into their practice or product making.
