A note on grading: Ylang Ylang Essential Oil is produced through a fractional distillation process, with the oil collected in successive fractions over several hours. Grade I (also known as Extra or First) represents the first and finest fraction of the distillation — the most intensely floral, richest and most aromatic expression of the oil, prized by perfumers for its exceptional quality and aromatic complexity.

The name Ylang Ylang translates from Malay as "flower of flowers" — a fitting tribute to one of the most extraordinary floral essential oils in existence. A large, fast-growing tree native to Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia, Cananga Odorata produces long-petalled yellow flowers of exceptional fragrance — highly prized in the fine fragrance, cosmetics and food industries the world over. In Indonesia, the flowers were traditionally strewn on the beds of newly married couples as a symbol of joy and celebration. In China, the fragrance was used to purify the ceremonial robes of the mandarin. Muslim women burned the oil to scent their private chambers in royal palaces.
