How to Smudge Your Home: A Step-by-Step Guide
Smudging is one of the oldest and most widely practised energy cleansing rituals in the world. Rooted in Indigenous traditions, it involves burning sacred herbs and using the smoke to purify a space, object, or person of negative energy. Whether you're moving into a new home, recovering from a difficult period, or simply want to refresh the energy in your space, smudging is a powerful and meaningful ritual.
Here's a simple step-by-step guide to smudging your home for the first time.
What You'll Need
- A smudge stick — white sage is the most traditional choice, but palo santo, lavender, and cedar are also popular
- A fireproof bowl or abalone shell to catch ash
- A lighter or matches
- An open mind and a clear intention

Before You Begin
Open windows and doors before you start. This gives the negative energy (and the smoke) somewhere to go. Set a clear intention for your smudging session — what are you clearing out, and what are you inviting in?
Step-by-Step: How to Smudge Your Home
- Light your smudge stick. Hold the tip over a flame for around 20–30 seconds until it catches. Allow it to burn for a moment, then gently blow out the flame so it smoulders and produces smoke.
- Start at the front door. Begin your smudging at the main entrance and work clockwise through each room.
- Move slowly and intentionally. Wave the smudge stick gently so the smoke reaches into corners, along walls, and around doorframes — areas where stagnant energy tends to collect.
- Speak your intention aloud (or silently) as you move through each room. Something simple like “I cleanse this space of all negative energy and welcome peace and positivity” works beautifully.
- Pay special attention to corners, doorways, and windows — these are transition points where energy can become stuck.
- Finish where you started. Return to the front door to complete the circuit.
- Extinguish safely. Press the lit end firmly into your fireproof bowl or sand to extinguish. Never leave a smudge stick burning unattended.
After Smudging
Take a moment to sit quietly and notice how the energy in your space feels. Many people report an immediate sense of lightness and calm after smudging.
You can smudge as often as you feel called to — after arguments, illness, or periods of stress, or simply as a regular cleansing ritual.
Choosing Your Smudge Stick
- White sage — the most powerful cleanser, ideal for deep energy clearing
